Don Giovanni

In Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Don Giovanni", we experience one particular day of the notorious debaucher, whose amorous adventures unsettle the whole of Europe. But his nefarious actions soon lead to dark consequences after he seduces the daughter of a morality-guarding Commendatore and subsequently kills him in a duel.

While Don Giovanni, with his faithful companion Leporello, continues to pursue his desires without a care in the world, a web of vengefulness and helplessness forms around him. In a series of fateful encounters and mistaken identities, he is finally confronted with his own moral decline, with the ghost of the Commendatore always breathing down his neck. The story culminates in a dramatic finale in which Don Giovanni, with his ultimate indifference, confronts the Commendatore in petrified form and thus faces death.

THROUGH ITS CAPTIVATING TALE OF LOVE, SEDUCTION AND THE STRUGGLE BETWEEN MORALITY AND FREEDOM, "DON GIOVANNI" RAISES ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS ABOUT THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE. IS HE GOING TAKE OTHERS ALONG IN HIS DOWNFALL TO HELL?

AN OPERA FESTIVAL FOR LOCALS AND INTERNATIONAL VISITORS

The event was initiated by the charitable association, "Friends of the Vienna Opera Summer”. The aim of the charity is to introduce a new opera project to the cty of Vienna, using one of the most beautiful locations of the city for creating a unique open-air experience to locals and international tourists alike.

"With the vision of keeping Vienna alive as a cultural capital during the summer months, the Vienna Opera Summer stands for openness to the wider public without sacrificing artistic excellence," says Artistic Director Joji Hattori, who could gather many years of experience in staging open-air operas in Kittsee.

"WE ARE PLANNING A FESTIVAL THAT WILL WIN THE HEARTS OF BOTH VIENNESE AND INTERNATIONAL VISITORS BY TRYING TO PRESENT MOZART'S MOST BRILLIANT OPERA WITHOUT TOO MUCH MODERNISM."
Hattori shares this concern with director and casting director Dominik Am Zehnhoff-Söns: "The majestic backdrop of Belvedere Palace, combined with an imposing stage set, spectacular lighting and video effects and opulent costumes, offers a unique experience that immerses the audience in another world. A classic production, updated with modern dialog elements and appealing to all age groups, awaits the audience at this historic location."
Manfred Waba is responsible for the stage design, and many young names from the local opera scene shine on stage around the title role actor Thomas Tatzl.
